U3A BOOK GROUP
Leader: Liz Hoy
Admin: Nina McDowell
The Book Group meets monthly, on the third Tuesday of the month, at 11 am. The session always begins with a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits kindly provided by our leader Liz, and Beth, a loyal member.
The chosen book for each month is based on recommendations from the members. This provides us with a wide variety of reading material as we each have our own individual taste in literature and it is an enriching experience to challenge ourselves to read books ouside our “comfort zone” that we would not normally consider.
The meetings are held in a relaxed atmosphere of open, stimulating and animated discussions, punctuated with a liberal sprinkling of good humour and laughter with all members feeling free to express their opinions.
Over the past year we have enjoyed a variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction, including writers from Ireland, England, America and North Korea.
The books for discussion this year have included:-
I am Pilgrim, by Terry Hayes – a mystery and thriller.
Elizabeth is Missing, by Emma Healey – a sophisticated physchological mystery and honest meditation on memory, identity and ageing.
In Order to Live, by Yeonmi Park – a North Korean girl’s journey to freedom.
Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes – an interntional bestseller.
All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr – an imaginative novel inspired by the horrors of World War II.
Miss Carter’s War, by Sheila Hancock – a story about one woman’s life in post-war Britain.
After You, the sequel to Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes.
Milkman, by Anna Burns, the Northern Irish Booker Prize winner – a story of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness.
Looking further ahead, we have selected a number of interesting titles for next year, including, for September, The Couple Next Door, a Sunday Times bestseller, by Shari Lapena.
If you enjoy reading you will be very welcome to join our group where your views and suggestions will be warmly received.
