Stephen Rea will be back at Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy, this time directing a performance with the Field Day theatre company as part of the literary centre’s latest events programme.
No stranger to staging plays by Seamus Heaney – they jointly presented the world premiere of The Cure of Troy in 1990 - Rea will be directing a performance which reflects the poetry in Field Work, Heaney’s fifth collection of poems, in February.
Both the Lyric Theatre and Kabosh theatre company will also create dramatic performances based on Heaney’s work as part of the new events programme for January to March, which weaves exclusive appearances by critically acclaimed actors and authors, leading musicians and songwriters, with celebrations of local talent and creativity.
Oscar-winning Glen Hansard’s concert has already sold out, while internationally renowned pianist, Finghin Collins, will bring a selection of music from Chopin and the Irish composer, John Field, to the intimate surroundings of HomePlace’s performance space, The Helicon.
A series of ‘In conversation’ and ‘meet the author’ events include local talent such as Deirdre Madden from Toomebridge, while the poet and current Professor of Poetry at Oxford, Simon Armitage, and the Heaney-inspired writer, Nick Laird, originally from Cookstown and now an adjunct professor at Columbia University, will be reading and talking to audiences.
Acclaimed poet and broadcaster Ruth Padel will discuss the importance – or not – of a writer’s desk with Carlo Gebler, helping to set the scene for a temporary exhibition - The Hedge School of Glanmore – which will explore the importance of the small cottage in County Wicklow which was so central to Seamus Heaney’s writing.
The new programme also includes a workshop series, from the fascinating art of making paper by hand, to using traditional crafts and methods to fashion the practical food and garden baskets used around the shores of Lough Neagh in their thousands.
